Working in our Major Projects Solutions Team, initially reporting to the Solutions Director, you will be an experienced senior energy systems analyst, you will hold a pivotal role to lead our small, expert team of carbo-techno-economic modellers and analysts. You will be a highly competent player-manager with a strong blend of engineering, commercial and data analytics credentials.

You will spearhead the techno-economic design, assessment, and optimisation of complex, integrated energy systems and microgrid models – developed using bespoke high resolution decision support tools primarily in Python. You will continue to build our functional capability in this specialist area and ensure we remain at the forefront of local energy systems innovation.

This is an exciting and powerful role as you will help set out the solution and course for major investment in local energy systems. The successful candidate will therefore have a genuine opportunity to position SSE as a partner of choice for our whole system propositions and ground-breaking local energy solutions. You will develop the analytical tools that solve some of the toughest decarbonisation challenges, deploying you and your teams’ experience, ingenuity, diligence, and creativity to meet multiple complex business objectives and client outcomes.

• Leading a team of techno-economic modellers to interpret and convert energy system designs, operating principles, and constraints into advanced energy models using tools like Python, MATLAB, Homer, and Plexos.
• Develop investment grade models that seamlessly integrate project commercial dimensions, allowing you to analyse and optimise principal financial and economic metrics of complex energy systems; generating clear cash flow, returns, and other key financial projections.
• Evaluate multiple scenarios and the potential value stack from grid services and ancillary markets to enhance project viability. Amend solutions to deliver client objectives whilst optimising the financial and physical operating parameters of principal energy assets.
• Lead simulations (e.g. power flow modelling, dispatch optimisation) to test different scenarios and strategies, identifying the most efficient and cost-effective solutions. Your expertise will guide decision-making and drive project success.
• Craft Business Intelligence reports that provide actionable insights for directing energy system development strategies. Your work will guide our mission to make impactful decisions for a sustainable future.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have at least 5 years relevant experience and:

• Bachelor’s degree from a relevant engineering or data science university, showcasing your solid foundation in energy system modelling, electrical and/or mechanical engineering.
• Demonstrated experience in modelling energy systems using tools such as Python, MATLAB, Homer, Plexos, or similar software.
• Previous experience in pre-tender design/FEED processes, design, and post-construction control, automation, and optimisation deliverables, particularly related to mechanical, electrical, and energy systems.
• Skilled in the integration of financial, commercial, and economic considerations into energy system optimisation models and interpreting these into associated business propositions and business plans.
